This article provides a high-level overview of the components used in Microsoft® DirectShow®. It is intended as an introduction both for application developers and for developers writing custom DirectShow filters. Application developers can usually ignore most of the details of what happens in DirectShow at the lower levels. However, it is still a good idea to read this section, in order to have a general understanding of the DirectShow architecture.
