6.2 Specifying Graphics-Compression Data

Some printers support the ability to receive raster-graphic data in a compressed format, which typically results in increased performance. The increased performance is due to the reduced amount of data that needs to be sent to the printer to print bitmaps. If your printer supports compression of graphics data (that is, bitmaps) using run-length encoding (RLE) or Tag Information File Format (TIFF) version 4.0, you should specify the related data and commands in the Compression Modes dialog box. This dialog box contains controls which identify the compression scheme, specify the Begin Compression command, and specify the End Compression command. The Universal Printer Driver version 1.0 only supports TIFF 4.0 compression. The following illustration shows the compression dialog box:

The Diconix 150 Plus printer does not support data compression; the HP LaserJet IIP printer supports both run-length encoding and TIFF. The LaserJet examples are based on the dialog box that contains commands for TIFF encoding.
