Summary:
In general, for optimal SQL Server performance, a dedicated server
machine should be used; in addition, the FAT file system is
recommended. The basic strategy to employ is to conserve all memory
for other services (such as the network) by setting their parameters
to the minimum that can be achieved without running out of resources.
SQL Server performance can go up dramatically; therefore, adding more
physical memory or reducing memory needs of other non-SQL Server
processes can improve performance.
For more information, consult the SQL Server installation manual
specific to the version you are running. The version 4.2 manual has
separate sections with information on running on a LAN Manager-based
network, Novell, or Banyan.
