Summary:

The online help for LINK386 incorrectly states that if LINK386 cannot

find a specified module definition (.DEF) file in the current

directory or in the path specified with the filename, it will search

the path indicated by the LIB environment variable. LINK386 does not

search the directories specified by the LIB environment variable. If

LINK386 cannot find the file in the current directory or in the path

indicated by the filename, it will stop searching and return an error.

Module definition (.DEF) files are used by the linker to indicate

certain parameters that are required to correctly build an .EXE or

DLL. In order to find these files, they must be specified on the LINK

command line or in a linker response file.
