Installing Netlogon Services
----------------------------
Note: Do not select the Netlogon service when initially installing
Microsoft LAN Manager version 2.00b. After installing LAN Manager,
configure the Netlogon service as described below, then run the Setup
program again and select the Netlogon service.
The following are the three areas that must be addressed to
successfully install the Netlogon services as documented on pages 71-
74 of the Microsoft LAN Manager Administrator's Guide in steps 1-12
(the page numbers below refer to this guide):
1. Create a group called SERVERS (see steps 1-5 on pages 71 and 72).
2. Add primary, backup, and member computer names as users, and join
with the group SERVERS (see steps 6 and 7 on pages 72 and 73).
3. Select Primary from the Role In Domain option (see step 8 on page
74).
Avoiding Common Mistakes
------------------------
To avoid commonly made mistakes when setting up the Netlogon service,
please note the following:
1. Confirm that the directory specified by the scripts= entry in the
[netlogon] section of the LANMAN.INI file exists on the server.
2. Check the directory specified by the userpath= entry in the
[server] section of the LANMAN.INI file. Verify that this directory
contains a subdirectory named SCRIPTS.
3. Do not change the userpath= value in the LANMAN.INI file.
4. Verify that the group created to contain the accounts of each
server is spelled SERVERS (not SERVER; note the second "S") by
using the LAN Manager administrator's screen. Type "net admin"
(without the quotation marks) to generate the administrator's
screen.
5. Verify that the server is in USER level security by checking the
entry listed by Security Mode after typing:
net config srv
The Netlogon service cannot be used with SHARE level security.
