INF: PCLP and LM Do Not Talk over Broadband or Baseband

ID Number: Q73218

OS/2

Summary:

Page 3 of the technical note titled "Using MS LAN Manager with IBM LAN

Requester and LAN Server" (Sept. 1990) cautions that although

Microsoft's LAN Manager and IBM's Lan Requestor are compatible on

Token-Ring and EtherNet, "they do not communicate on ...broadband."

The reason for this statement is that IBM actually changes the format

of the NetBEUI protocol on broadband and baseband. Therefore, IBM's

NetBEUI and Microsoft's NetBEUI will not talk to each other across

these two networks. On Token-Ring or EtherNet, however, communication

succeeds as long as Microsoft or IBM NetBEUI is used on all the

machines.
