INF: Hard Disk Space Size Estimates Needed for Remote Boot

ID Number: Q63368

OS/2

Summary:

The following are some estimates of hard disk space/size requirements

that can be used when installing OS/2, OS/2 LAN Manager, DOS LAN

Manager, or MS-DOS:

Program Size

------- ----

OS/2 1.2 9.761 megabytes (MB)

OS/2 LAN Manager 2.0 5.396 MB

DOS LAN Manager 3.235 MB

MS-DOS 4.01 1.287 MB

.IMG files typically 600-700K

All OS/2 remote boot workstations have private copies of

workstation-specific files, such as CONFIG.SYS, STARTUP.CMD,

OS2INIT.CMD, LANMAN.INI, OS2.INI, OS2SYS.INI, AUTOEXEC.BAT,

SWAPPER.DAT, and some LAN Manager subtrees (PROFILES, LOGS, ACCOUNTS,

REPL); however, they share a central copy of common OS/2 and LAN

Manager utilities (such as OS2\DLL\*.DLL and LANMAN\NETPROG\*.EXE).

If a rippled (RPL'd) workstation uses part of the server's OS/2 and

LAN Manager trees (requiring more shares and modified .FIT files) to

share some of the common OS/2 and LAN Manager utilities between the

server itself and all remote boot workstations, some of the additional

15 MB for each OS/2 / LAN Manager tree can be saved. In that case, the

nested OS/2 and LAN Manager trees are unnecessary; however, now the

server and all the remote boot workstations must use the exact same

versions of the operating system and LAN Manager. Also, it will not be

possible to update one without also updating the other.
