PRB: Increasing the Maximum Number of Connections Under MS-DOS

ID Number: Q78980

2.00 2.10

MS-DOS

Summary:

The following information applies to LAN Manager versions 2.0 and 2.1

running under MS-DOS.

SYMPTOMS

To increase the number of shares to connect to, some users have

increased the number of shares they can connect to in LAN Manager

version 2.0 by raising the value of "numresources" in the

[workstation] section of LANMAN.INI. However, upon updating to LAN

Manager 2.1, this setting no longer exists and the parameter must

be added back to the [workstation] section of LANMAN.INI.

CAUSE

By default, the value of SESSIONS is 6, and the value of NCBS is

12. When these two values are changed, NCBS must be at least 2

times the value of SESSIONS (the 1:2 ratio must be preserved).

RESOLUTION

The recommended method for increasing the number of shares to

connect to is to increase the values of SESSIONS and NCBS in the

[NETBEUI_XIF] section of PROTOCOL.INI instead. (This applies only

when using NETBEUI as the protocol.)

In addition to changing SESSIONS and NCBS as described, the

LANMAN.INI parameters "numresources" and "numservers" must both be

set to the same value as SESSIONS. For a LAN Manager 2.1 MS-DOS

workstation, these parameters must both be added to LANMAN.INI.
