Summary:
Hewlett-Packard (HP) provides software that makes it possible for the
HP IIISi printer to attach directly to LAN Manager version 2.0 and 2.1
Ethernet and Token Ring networks. The HP IIISi printer can use 3Com
3+Open network cards in a LAN Manager 2.0 or 2.1 network; however, the
HP IIISi software for LAN Manager 2.0 must be used. While the software
from HP was written for LAN Manager 2.0, it appears to work correctly
for LAN Manager 2.1 networks as well.
To perform some of the steps below, you must be logged on with an
account that has ADMIN privileges. It will be necessary to restart the
server twice.
Make sure a LAN Manager server is installed, and have the following
items available: the appropriate HP IIISi Network Interface card for
either Token Ring or Ethernet networks, HP's Network Printer Interface
software for LAN Manager 2.0 (available on CompuServe in the HP
Forum), a small flat-blade screwdriver, and appropriate cabling for
the network. If unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cable is used for an
Ethernet network, it will be necessary to purchase the HP EtherTwist
transceiver.
Procedures for Installation and Setup
-------------------------------------
1. Install all options in the HP IIISi before installing the network
printer interface to the network (such as the Duplexing Unit Kit,
the PostScript Upgrade Kit, and extra memory).
2. Note the card address on the network interface card for the HP
IIISi. If necessary, running a Self Test on the printer will
reveal this address at the top-center of the page.
3. Install the appropriate network interface card into the HP IIISi,
as detailed in the "Network Printer Interface Administrator's
Guide." Note carefully that the correct network port or data rate
jumpers are set on the card.
Please note the following:
- Ethernet card's default for the BNC (thin coaxial cable) port
- Token Ring card's default for a 4-megabyte (MB) per second
data rate
Attach the cable to the network and turn on the printer. If the
HP IIISi is installed correctly to the network, the printer will
eventually display 00 PCL READY or 00 PS READY on the LCD.
4. Install the remote boot protocol on the LAN Manager server using
LAN Manager Setup.
WARNING: Do NOT install the remote boot service! The HP IIISi uses
DLC protocol for its method of communication. The remote boot
protocol provides this needed communication. The remote boot
service is therefore unnecessary for establishing communication
between the server and the printer.
5. Stop (NET STOP SERVER) and reboot (restart) the server.
6. Log on with administrative privileges.
7. Install ALL the printer drivers you want the HP IIISi to have
queues created with. Use the OS/2 printer installer (OS/2 1.21) or
Print Manager (OS/2 1.3 and later) as needed. Some drivers are
IBMNULL, HP PCL5, and PSCRIPT. Do not create a printer or a queue
for these drivers. If printers or queues are created, use the
Print Manager to delete them.
8. Insert the Install and Setup disk, and run INSTALL.EXE.
WARNING: Before running SETUP.EXE (as the Install program directs),
make the spooler correction as described below!
9. As indicated in the README file that accompanies the software,
you will need to make a SPOOLER correction. Copy PMSPL.DLL and
SPL1B.DLL from either the \121 or the \131 directory on the
Install and Setup disk to the INSTALL directory (for example,
C:\HPNETPRN):
a. If OS/2 version 1.21 is being used on the server, take the
files from the \121 directory.
b. If OS/2 version 1.30 or OS/2 1.30.1 is being used on the
server, take the files from the \131 directory.
c. Copy the CONFIG.SYS file to CONFIG.BAK.
d. Modify CONFIG.SYS with a system editor by appending C:\HPNETPRN
to the front of the LIBPATH variable.
For example, if LIBPATH was
LIBPATH=C:\LANMAN\NETLIB;C:\OS2\DLL;
change it to:
LIBPATH=C:\HPNETPRN;C:\LANMAN\NETLIB;C:\OS2\DLL;
10. Stop (NET STOP SERVER) and reboot the server.
11. Log on with administrative privileges.
12. Select the HP Network Printer Setup icon or run C:\HPNETPRN\SETUP.EXE
directly. From the Setup menu, choose Add Network Printer.
a. Define a printer name (for example, HP3SI) with a maximum of
seven characters.
b. Choose the correct card address from the choices available. If
the card address for the HP IIISi you want to install does not
appear, the server is not receiving the HP IIISi announcements
on the network. The cause of this may be bad cabling, separated
networks, filtering, and so forth.
c. Define a queue name (for example, HP_ADMN$). This queue must
have administrative privileges created for it. SETUP.EXE will
define these permissions automatically. Because of the special
nature of this queue, it will probably be desirable to create
other queues later with user privileges. It is also desirable
to make the share name hidden so users will not attempt to
connect to this share. All shares ending in $ are hidden.
d. Select ALL the printer drivers you want the printer queues to
have access to (for example, IBMNULL, HP PCL5, PSCRIPT).
e. Choose Add.
f. The SETUP.EXE program will automatically create a share for
this special queue. It will be assigned ADMIN permission only.
Do not change this setting.
13. Using the OS/2 Print Manager, define the queues that will be
available to users.
a. From the Print Manager's Setup menu, choose Queues, and select
the Add button.
b. Define a queue name (for example, HP3_PCL or HP3_PS).
c. Choose the appropriate queue driver for your version of OS/2.
1) If you have OS/2 versions 1.2x, choose LMPRINT.
2) If you have OS/2 version 1.3 or later, choose PMPRINT.
d. Select the Printer name defined in step 6a.
e. Select a printer driver to associate with the queue (for
example, IBMNULL, HP PCL5, PSCRIPT).
f. Select the Add button.
g. Repeat steps 13a through 13f for all the queues that will be
shared for printing.
14. Using LAN Manager's NET ADMIN, define the shares for the queue(s)
defined in step 13.
a. From the View menu, choose Shared Resources and select Add
Share.
b. Choose Printer Share Type.
c. Select a queue defined in step 13.
d. Assign permissions as desired.
e. Repeat steps 14a through 14d for all the queues that will be
shared for printing.
15. For LAN Manager 2.0, use LAN Manager's NET ADMIN to save the
share(s) created in SRVAUTO.PRO, if desired.
16. Additional changes may need to be made regarding service access
points (SAPs), maxthreads, and other items. Please refer to the
README file that accompanies the software.
