INF: MDK Setup Does Not Auto-Detect SoundBlaster Card

WINDOWS

Summary:

The Microsoft Multimedia Development Kit (MDK) setup program does not

automatically detect the SoundBlaster card. This feature was removed

from the product because the process could hang some machines. Before

running setup, it is necessary to know the port address to which the

card is set.

During the setup process, the setup program displays the installed

hardware and requests verification. On this screen, the "Audio"

selection states "Audio board not selected." Use the arrow keys to

highlight this option and press ENTER. A menu with the following three

choices is displayed:

Audio board not selected

SoundBlaster 1

SoundBlaster 2

Select either SoundBlaster 1 or SoundBlaster 2 to correspond with the

card installed in the machine. To determine the version of the

SoundBlaster card, contact the hardware vendor or the manufacturer,

Creative Labs.

Select "The above list matches my computer" to continue the setup

process. The program prompts for the port address the SoundBlaster is

on. Under normal circumstances, the MDK setup program provides an

error message if the port address is incorrect or has a conflict.

If there are any problems getting the SoundBlaster to work properly

after completing setup, contact the hardware vendor or Creative Labs.

One way to test the SoundBlaster is to use the Control Panel. In the

Control Panel, select the Sound icon. Choose a sound and press the

test button. The sound should play. If the test button is unavailable

(grayed), the correct port address or interrupt may not be selected.

These options can be set by editing the SNDBLST.DRV section of the

SYSTEM.INI file, which resembles the following:

[sndblst.drv]

int=7

port=230

To determine the SoundBlaster port and interrupt, contact the hardware

vendor or use the TEST-SBC.EXE program provided on the disk included

with the SoundBlaster card.
