Summary:

SYMPTOMS

Using a version of the Microsoft LINK utility prior to the linker

version shipped with the Microsoft language product used may

result in the following error:

LINK : fatal error L1089: filename : cannot open response file

CAUSE

One possible cause may be that the linker shipped with the

operating system is being used rather than the one shipped with

the Microsoft language product. This would occur if the MS-DOS or

MS OS/2 directory were in the path before the language product's

directory.

Another cause may simply be an earlier linker version. Check the

path to determine which directory it may be located in.

RESOLUTION

To correct the problem, do one of the following:

- Reorder the path so that the directory with the correct linker

will be searched before any other directories that contain

LINK.EXE.

- or -

- Rename the other linker(s) LINK.OLD so that they will not be

used by accident and so the file can be easily recovered if

necessary.
