Major Strengths

Guide's highly customizable user interface gives authors a high degree of creative freedom. Literally every aspect of a Guide application can be customized, right down to the application window and menu interface.

Guide provides extensive document formatting and text manipulation features.

Guide's information model scales up well to encompass large applications incorporating many megabytes of text and graphics. Maintenance tools support the editing of large document collections. Conversion tools are also available for converting typesetting tapes or word processed documents to Guide format.

Guide was originally designed for use on lower-end PCs with limited memory and therefore runs well on 80286-based machines with slower clock speeds.

Guide's built-in support for custom programming (similar to Hypercard XCMDs) and its ability to call Windows dynamic-link libraries makes it possible for a programmer to extend the functionality of Guide. Two language interpreters that come with the product allow Guide documents to control devices connected to the serial port, and to launch other applications.

Because Guide is based on a document metaphor, it is ideally suited for book-like applications containing text and graphics that require multimedia enhancements.
