Mankind has produced images for thousands of years. Images have been produced with such materials as paint, ink, and chalk and transferred onto such media as canvas, paper, or stone. The development of photography in the early 1800s provided the means to capture reality permanently on paper. Today's technology can now store and display images electronically.
