A context string identifies each topic in a Viewer title. The Viewer uses the context string to find a specific topic when users select a jump to that topic. A context string is required for each topic. If a context-string footnote is used, it must be the first footnote in the topic.
A topic can have additional context strings that don't appear at the beginning of the topic. These context strings are used to jump to the middle of a topic.
Context strings are invisible in the title.

A string of up to 255 characters. Valid characters are the alphabetic characters A–Z, the numeric characters 0–9, and the period (.) or underscore (_) character.
This RTF entry places the context string “usa_main” in a topic using a number-sign footnote:
