12.2.1 Creating Links

Under the subject of "Creating Links," you can insert step-by-step procedures that guide the user through the actual process of linking objects. For example, you might have a procedure titled "Creating a Link from a Source File in Another Application." This procedure would describe how to insert a link to a file that was created using some other application, and would be centered around the Paste Special dialog box in a manner similar to that shown in Figure 43.

Creating Links

To create links, you use the Paste Special command on the Edit menu.

Paste Special dialog box

Source: The application containing the source of the information on the Clipboard

Data Type: The presentation formats available from the Clipboard. These vary from application to application. Those in the list that have a format ending with the word “object,” as in Paintbrush Picture Object, shown in the preceding illustration, are not used for linking, only to embed objects.

Another linking procedure might describe how to create a link to source information that was created with your application, such as a file other than the current file.

Be sure to caution the user with regard to saving the source file prior to performing any linking operations.
