The implementation of OLE into an application introduces new terms to the user. As a means of providing a standard set of terms to OLE application users, the following recommendations and list of words are provided for use within user documentation.
The following strategies are recommended for writing about OLE:
Whenever possible, indicate the type of object under discussion—for example, "Word text," "CorelDraw drawing," "1-2-3 worksheet," and so on.
When appropriate, indicate whether an object is linked or embedded by using a modifier such as "linked object" or "embedded object."
Distinguish between the link and the source information.
Distinguish between a "document" and a "document's application," using the appropriate term:
source document and source application
container document and container application
Distinguish between a "document" and a "file." Reserve the word "file" for operating system-level discussions.
Use "compound document" in general, conceptual discussions of OLE. Use "container document" for procedural descriptions and instructions.
Use "copying" only as a generic term that covers standard copying and pasting as well as linking and embedding.
Note See the Glossary of Terms, later in this manual, for a description of OLE-specific terminology as used in this manual.
