The New command on the File menu creates a new source file. Creating a source file does not affect any other source files you may have open.
Until you save the file and give it a name, this first file is named UNTITLED 1. The next new file you open is initially named UNTITLED 2. The name for each subsequent new source file increments by one, for example, UNTITLED 3, UNTITLED 4, and so on.
