Icons and Terms as Links

In the online reference, a “link” appears as an icon (a graphical image) or a word or phrase in a help topic. When you choose a link, the related help topic appears in the Help window.

An icon links to a screen with a list of topics or a collection of icons from which you can branch out into the online reference. A word or phrase links to the definition of a term or to a help topic for information on how to do a task.

A word or phrase links to either a “complete help topic” or a “pop-up” window. A complete help topic is a new screen of information, such as a procedure on adding files to a project. A pop-up is a small window displayed on top of a screen of help information (pop-ups are often definitions). You can identify a link that moves to a complete help topic by a solid underline. A link for a pop-up is identified by a dotted underline.

Icons can link to complete help topics or pop-ups also.

Figure 6.4 shows an illustration of links in the help window.

When you use the mouse to move the insertion point over a link or a definition, the arrow insertion point turns into a hand with a pointing finger. To activate the link or definition, click the insertion point on the term or the icon.

You can also select links and definitions with the TAB key. Press TAB to highlight the link or definition you want, and press ENTER to activate.
