Index Server

Microsoft Index Server is a free, downloadable component of Windows NT Server version 4.0. It includes support for HTML, text, and all Microsoft Office documents, in their original format. Microsoft® Index Server automatically indexes the full text and properties of files on your server, whether it is an intranet, an Internet, or simply a file-and-print server. Index Server allows you to search all of your Web documents, including Microsoft® Word and Microsoft® Excel. Built-in database connectivity enables easy access to your data from any browser.

Index Server uses content filters, which are associated with particular document formats, to extract the textual information contained within a formatted file. Content filters comply with the IFilter ActiveX™ programmatic interface published by Microsoft. By writing a content filter, software authors can expose their contents to Index Server for indexing and retrieval by end users.
