L

leaf object
An object in the Microsoft Exchange Server directory that is not capable of containing other objects.
least-cost routing
The assignment of costs to communication lines, so that the associated message transfer agent (MTA) intelligently routes information over the line with the lowest cost. This capability works closely with the load-balancing feature.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
An on-the-wire protocol used to perform directory operations such as read, search, add, and remove.
Lightweight Remote Procedure Call (LRPC)
An OLE method for implementing an RPC, which changes the objects semantics to apartment model threading.
list server
An application that processes lists of items, such as addresses, recipients, or objects. For example, a list server can gather a list of topics from users, receive a list of messages that apply to a specific topic, and distribute these to a list of other users who have expressed an interest.
load balancing
The use of multiple communication lines for re-routing traffic to less busy lines, which improves the overall efficiency of information routing through the organization.
local replication
The ability to synchronize directories between the user’s computer and the network copies. This allows users to work offline with public folders and mailboxes. See also offline folders.
