Installation Programs

When a creating a new software package to run in a Systems Management Server environment, you must include a setup or installation program that supports the requirements of the SMS environment. You must also include a Package Definition File (PDF) that contains predefined Workstation, Sharing, and Inventory property settings for your package, and a package directory structure containing the files required to support the installation options in the PDF.

This section starts with an overview of the software installation process, including checklists of steps for installing and deinstalling software in an SMS environment. It then defines the SMS requirements for unattended installation programs, describes the package command status MIF file, and outlines the PDF format. Finally, it discusses the various SMS job types and options, providing sample PDFs for each type of job. Requirements for gaining the Microsoft BackOffice Logo are also described in this section.
