About Disk Dump Devices

Disk dump devices are files on hard disks or other disk storage media. Disk devices can be defined on a server's local disk or on a disk on a shared network resource. Dumping to a file on the same physical device as the database is not usually recommended; if the disk device containing that file crashes, there is no way to recover the database.
