Remote Servers and Logins Manager

SQL Enterprise Manager includes a way to manage remote servers and remote logins. With the Remote Servers and Logins Manager interface, one person can manage many servers and centralize administrative tasks. With this interface, you can also set distribution options for replication and configure ODBC subscribers.

    To manage remote servers and logins
  1. From SQL Enterprise Manager, in the Server Manager window select a server.
  2. From the Server menu, choose Remote Servers.
  3. Complete the Manage Remote Servers dialog box that appears.
Dialog box option Description
Server Name Specifies the name of the server to be configured as a remote server (to the server that is being administered by SQL Enterprise Manager).
RPC Specifies that the server listed in the Server Name box is a remote server.
Subscriber Specifies that the remote server will have subscriber status for replication.
Publisher Specifies that the remote server will have publisher status for replication.
Distributor Specifies that the remote server will have distributor status for replication.
Distribution Publisher Specifies the remote server as a publisher and as a distributor for replication.
Distribution Options Sets distribution options for replication. This button opens the Distribution Options dialog box and is enabled only when the Subscriber option is selected.
Translate All Remote Login Names to Maps login IDs from the remote server to the local login name that is selected from the list box: either to a specific login ID or to the same name.
Trusted Specifies whether the remote login ID will be validated by Windows NT security or by a password. If this check box is selected, the security will be handled by Windows NT and a password is not required. If this check box is not selected, standard security will be used, and a login ID and a password will be required.
Remote Server Login Name Specifies a login ID from the remote server.
Mapped Login Name Specifies a local login ID that the remote login ID is mapped to.
Trusted Specifies whether the remote login ID is validated by Windows NT security or by a password. If this column is checked, the security is handled by Windows NT and a password is not required. If this column is not checked, standard security is used and a login ID and a password are required.
Add/Modify Adds the server selected in the Server Name box as a remote server (to the server being administered by SQL Enterprise Manager). When editing an existing remote server, the Add button changes to Modify. Choosing Modify accepts changes that are made to the configuration options for the remote server.
Drop Removes the remote server status of the server that is selected in the Server Name box.
Drop Login Drops the login(s) selected from the Remote Server Login Name list.
