SNMP Terminology

To help you understand the SNMP information provided here, some SNMP terms are defined for use as a quick reference.

Term Description
SNMP Is an acronym for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Use SNMP applications to monitor the status of SQL Server installations and performance information, explore defined databases, and view server and database configuration parameters.
SNMP Agent Is the SQL SNMP extension agent (SQLSNMP.DLL), which is server software that extends the functionality of the Microsoft SNMP service. The agent processes SNMP requests for data and data objects that reside on the local server. The agent can also send a trap, which alerts an operator and an SNMP console of an extraordinary event, such as a password violation.
SNMP Trap Are conditions from the client or server that cause an alert message to be sent to the SNMP agent. These conditions can be user-defined and are often related to error-condition handling, but do not necessarily represent an error.
SNMP Alert Is a message that contains some kind of condition or status message that was raised at the server or client.
