A Device object is pre-allocated physical storage (usually a file on a hard disk) used by SQL Server for storing database information. There are two general types of devices: database devices and dump devices. SQL Server uses database devices to store an entire database, including the transaction log. SQL Server uses dump devices for backup (dump) and restore (load) operations.
