Character Strings and Quotation Marks

Character strings and dates (char, varchar, and datetime datatypes) must be enclosed in single quotation marks (') when you enter or search for them. (Although double quotation marks are allowed, single quotation marks are preferred for compliance with ANSI standards.)

To specify other single quotation marks (or apostrophes) within a character entry, use two consecutive single quotation marks, as shown in the following example:

'I don''t understand.'

To continue a character string too long to fit on one line on your screen, enter a backslash ( \) before going to the following line.
