Public Newsgroups
Accessing the Newsgroups
Peer-to-peer newsgroups are available to help you interact with other Internet Client SDK users and are located on the news server msnews.microsoft.com. The following steps outline the process of using the Internet Connection Wizard to configure Outlook Express to access this news server:
- Start Outlook Express.
- Go to the Tools menu and select the Accounts... menu item.
- In the Internet Accounts dialog, select the Add button and choose the News... popup menu item. The Internet Connection Wizard will be displayed.
- Enter the name you want to have displayed on the From field when you post messages in the newsgroups. Select the Next> button to move to the next page of the wizard.
- Enter your email name. This can be used by others to send you email messages. Select the Next> button to move to the next page of the wizard.
- Enter the following as the name of the news (NNTP) server to use: msnews.microsoft.com.
Do not select the "My news server requires me to log on" option. You do not need to enter an account name or password. Select the Next> button to move to the next page of the wizard.- Specify a friendly name for this news account. This name is used only by Outlook Express when displaying the news servers you have created accounts for. Select the Next> button to move to the next page of the wizard.
- Specify the type of Internet connection to use when acessing the newsgroups. You have the following options:
- Connnect using my phone line
Select this option if you already have an account with an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and want to create a connection to that account using your modem and phone line.- Connect using my local area network (LAN)
Select this option if you want to connect to the Internet using a proxy server on your LAN or if your LAN is directly connected to the Internet.- I will establish my Internet connection manually
Select this option if you have an account with an ISP, your computer is already set up to connect to the Internet using this account, and you want to establish the connection to this account yourself. Select the Next> button to move to the next page of the wizard. This will take you to the last page of the wizard. Select the Finish button to exit the wizard.- At this point you will be back in the Internet Accounts dialog and the new account you just created will be listed. Select the Close button. Outlook Express will ask you if you want to download the newsgroups on the news server you just added. Select Yes.
- The Newsgroups dialog will be displayed listing the available newsgroups you can choose to subscribe to. The public Internet Client SDK newsgroups are all located under microsoft.public.inetsdk. The section below briefly describes what types of issues go into each of these newsgroups.

Programming the Win32 Internet APIExpectations of Service
- Microsoft's Role: Microsoft does not offer any formal support in the public newsgroups. Instead, Microsoft sponsors the newsgroups as a platform for participating in the global community of Microsoft customers and product experts. In addition, Microsoft may monitor the newsgroups to ensure accuracy of information and assist MVPs as needed.
- Microsoft MVPs: Microsoft MVPs (Most Valuable Professionals) volunteer technical answers and expertise in the newsgroups. The Microsoft MVPs come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions, with a willingness to give their time, expertise, and advice to enhance the technical skills of others within the newsgroups. Rules of Conduct
- Appropriate Language: The purpose of the newsgroups is to exchange technical information and expertise on Microsoft products. Please avoid personal attacks, slurs, and excessive profanity in your messages.
- Message Topics: Please keep the topic of messages relevant to the subject of the newsgroup. It's normal for some message topics to drift from the stated subject. However, to ensure maximum impact and benefit for all involved, please keep your messages close to the newsgroup's subject.
- Advertising/Solicitation: The newsgroups are for peer-to-peer assistance on Microsoft products. Participants are asked to refrain from posting advertisements or solicitations not pertaining to the intended use and purpose of the newsgroups.
