Setup Messages


The server Setup and client Setup programs create log files with information about the setup process. The Microsoft Proxy Server setup log is created as a file named C:\Mpssetup.log on the server computer. The client setup log is created as a file named C:\Mpcsetup.log the client computer.

Customers calling their support provider for assistance should have these log files available when calling. They contain valuable information beyond any error messages that are displayed to users.

The following is an alphabetized listing of messages that can be returned from the server and client Setup programs of Microsoft Proxy Server.

Call to LoadString with ID number failed.

[Client Setup]

An unexplained error in setup occurred.

Consult with your technical support team or network administrator for further assistance. If you contact your support provider regarding this error, be sure to have the setup log file, typically C:\Mpssetup.log, available when you call, and reference the ID number displayed with this message.

Call to LoadString with ID number failed err=error number.

[Client Setup]

An unexplained error in Setup occurred.

Consult with your technical support team or network administrator for further assistance. If you contact your support provider regarding this error, be sure to record the error number displayed with this message and have the setup log file, typically C:\Mpssetup.log, available when you call.

Could not identify disk drives configuration.

[Server Setup]

Indicates that setup was not able to recognize your current drive configuration.

Contact your technical support team for further assistance.

Either the logged account is not permitted to modify the system file: filename or the file is locked by another application.

[Server Setup]

Another Internet service is currently active on the server or the account you are using does not provide administrative access.

Use Internet Service Manager to manually stop all other Internet services. Also, verify that you have administrative rights for your current logon account before running Setup again.

Fail to wait for process termination.

[Server Setup]

A process was ended unexpectedly by the system.

Consult with your technical support team or network administrator for further assistance. If you contact your support provider regarding this error, be sure to have the setup log file (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Failed to initialized Service Manager. Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server could not be installed with your existing server configuration.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you contact your support provider.

Instances of Winsock DLLs appear in both system and windows directory. Setup cannot proceed until there is only one TCP/IP installation.

[Client Setup]

Setup found multiple copies of Winsock.dll. Only one copy of this file can be located within the Windows or System directories.

Delete or rename the additional copies of this file from the Windows and System directory and rerun Setup. If you have multiple TCP/IP client installations installed on this computer, or encounter further complications, contact your technical support team or network administrator for assistance.

Proxy Server setup requires administrator privileges.

[Server Setup]

You attempted to install Microsoft Proxy Server from a logon account that does not have administrator privileges.

Log off from your present user account and log on as Administrator before running Setup again.

Load of dynamic link library filename failed returning value.

[Server Setup]

The named DLL failed to load and may be missing.

Make sure that the named .dll file is located in the setup share path for Microsoft Proxy Server and run Setup again. Contact your technical support team or network administrator if the error occurs again.

Out of Memory

[Server Setup]

You do not have enough available resources on this computer to run the Setup program.

Close all other applications and restart the computer before running Setup again.

Please set a description of the internal network.

[Client Setup]

The Local Address Table (LAT) file is not present on your computer. This file is named Msplat.txt and is typically installed in C:\Wspclnt directory.

Make sure you have enough disk space and that the logon account you are using is permitted to write to C:\Wspclnt\Msplat.txt. Also, this file must contain at least one valid range of address pairs to identify internal IP network clients.

Setup cannot access the environment variable: variable name.

[Server Setup]

An environment variable was not defined or needs to be reset.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues, contact your technical support group or network administrator.

Setup cannot access the file: filename.

[Server Setup]

This file could not be modified or updated during setup.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues, contact your technical support group or network administrator.

Setup cannot access the registry value: valuename.

[Server Setup]

The registry was not updated, possibly because the required registry key was not previously defined.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues, contact your technical support group or network administrator.

Setup cannot create the file: filename.

[Server Setup]

This file could not be created during setup.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues contact your technical support team or network administrator.

Setup cannot create the file: filename Error=error number.

[Client Setup]

This file could not be copied onto your computer.

Check for available disk space, or contact your technical support team for further assistance.

Setup cannot create the share: share name.

[Server Setup]

A share could not be created on the share volume selected.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues, contact your technical support group or network administrator.

Setup cannot delete the registry entry: entryname.

[Server Setup]

The registry was not updated properly by the setup program, possibly because one of the following conditions occurred:

  • The account you are using has limited logon access to the server.
  • A previous version of Microsoft Proxy Server was installed on the server.
  • There are further problems with the registry itself.

Make sure you are using an account that has administrator privileges. If Microsoft Proxy Server was previously installed, run Setup again and select Remove All to completely remove all components from the previous version before installing again. If the error continues, consult with your technical support staff or your Microsoft Windows NT documentation for further information on problems with the registry.

Setup cannot load protocols to the registry error no: number.

[Server Setup]

Possibly caused by the file Proto.bin being deleted from the setup installation share path. This is possible only if you are attempting to run Microsoft Proxy Server setup from a network share path created by using files copied from the Microsoft Proxy Server compact disc.

Copy the file Proto.bin from the Microsoft Proxy Server compact disc to the network share path being used for setup.

Setup cannot locate Internet Explorer 1.x location.

[Client Setup]

The installed path to your browser application cannot be located.

You can continue running Setup normally, but you will need to manually configure your browser for use with the Web Proxy service. For more details on manually configuring Internet Explorer 1.5 for use with Microsoft Proxy Server, see “Setting Up Clients.”

Setup cannot locate Internet Explorer 2.0 location.

[Client Setup]

The installed path to your browser application cannot be located.

You can continue running Setup normally, but you will need to manually configure your browser for use with the Web Proxy service. For more details on manually configuring Internet Explorer 2.0 for use with Microsoft Proxy Server, see “Setting Up Clients.”

Setup cannot locate Netscape Navigator location.

[Client Setup]

The installed path to your browser application cannot be located.

You can continue running Setup normally, but you will need to manually configure your browser for use with the Web Proxy service. For more details on manually configuring Netscape Navigator for use with Microsoft Proxy Server, see “Setting Up Clients.”

Setup cannot open or create the registry entry: filename.

[Server Setup]

The registry was not updated properly by the Setup program, possibly because one of the following conditions occurred:

  • The account you are using has limited logon access to the server.
  • A previous version of Microsoft Proxy Server was installed on the server.
  • There are further problems with the registry itself.

Make sure you are using an account that has administrator privileges. If Microsoft Proxy Server was previously installed, run Setup again and select Remove All to completely remove all components from the previous version before installing again. If the error continues, consult with your technical support staff or your Microsoft Windows NT documentation for further information on handling problems with the registry.

Setup cannot set the INI value: initialization value.

[Client Setup]

The .ini file may be corrupted or missing on this computer.

Try running Setup again. If the problem continues, contact your technical support group or network administrator.

Setup cannot set the registry value: registry value.

[Server Setup]

The registry was not updated properly by the setup program, possibly because one of the following conditions occurred:

  • The account you are using has limited logon access to the server.
  • A previous version of Microsoft Proxy Server was installed on the server.
  • There are further problems with the registry itself.

Make sure you are using an account that has administrator privileges. If Microsoft Proxy Server was previously installed, run Setup again and select Remove All to completely remove all components from the previous version before installing again. Setup cannot write to the file: filename.

Setup could not access system.ini err=error number.

[Client Setup]

The System.ini file may be missing.

Make sure that the System.ini file exists. Consult with your technical support team or network administrator as necessary. If you contact your support provider regarding this error, be sure to record the error number displayed with this message and have the setup log file (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not access the service service name Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server Setup was not able to complete because of problems in accessing other installed Internet services.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not close file handle to System.ini err=error number.

[Client Setup]

May be caused by insufficient file handles.

May be able to correct by increasing the number of file handles in FILES= statement in Config.sys. Reboot the computer and run Setup again. Consult with your technical support team or network administrator as necessary.

If you contact your support provider regarding this error, be sure to record the error number displayed with this message and have the setup log file, C:\Mpssetup.log, available when you call.

Setup could not config the name service.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server Setup was not able to configure this service.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not create directory directory name Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Setup could not create the named directory, possibly because the disk drive is full.

Check for available disk space.

Setup Could not create link to name Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Setup could not create the named link, possibly because the disk drive is full or because of other file system errors.

Check for available disk space and for file system and disk storage integrity. Consult your product support team or network administrator as necessary.

Setup could not create the name service.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server setup was not able to create this service.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not delete the file filename.

[Client Setup]

The named file may be in use by another application or system resource.

Close all other applications and run Setup again.

Setup could not delete the file filename Error=error number.

[Client Setup]

The named file may be in use by another application or system resource.

Close all other applications and run Setup again.

Setup could not delete the name service.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server Setup was not able to delete this service.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not find the file Wsock32.dll in your system. Please consult the documentation for your system.

[Client Setup]

For Windows NT clients, make sure that Wsock32.dll is located in the C:\Winnt\System32 directory path.

Consult your Microsoft Windows documentation for further details on Wsock32.dll or contact your technical support team or network administrator as necessary.

Setup could not open the name service.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server Setup was not able to open this service.

Contact your support provider for further assistance. Be sure to have information from the setup log (typically C:\Mpssetup.log) available when you call.

Setup could not rename the file filename1 back to filename2.

[Client Setup]

Setup was unable to complete a system file update for installation. Critical system files may be missing or incorrectly named.

Run Setup again and select Remove All to completely remove all components from the previous version before installing again. If the message still occurs, you may be able to correct by renaming the following files in the Windows system directory:

  • For Windows 95 or Windows NT clients, rename _msrws32.dll to Wsock32.dll.
  • For Windows 3.1 clients, rename _msrws16.dll to Winsock.dll.

After renaming the appropriate file, run Setup again.

Setup could not rename the file filename1 to filename2.

[Client Setup]

Setup was unable to rename a file for installation.

Try running Setup again. If that fails, contact your technical support team or network administrator as necessary.

Setup could not save Local Address Table.

[Client Setup]

The LAT file could not be saved to disk on the computer. This file is named Msplat.txt and is installed in the C:\Wspclnt directory.

Make sure that this file is not already installed and in use by another application (such as a text editor). Make sure you have enough disk space and that the user account you are using is permitted to write to C:\Mspclnt\Msplat.txt.

Setup could not start the service service name Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server setup could not start another Internet service.

You can attempt to start the service manually by using the Internet Service Manager, and then run Setup again. If the error is not resolved by these steps, contact your technical support team or network administrator.

Setup could not stop the service service name because dependent services are running.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server setup could not stop a dependent service that is used by another active Internet service.

Make sure that all other Internet services are stopped manually (by using Internet Service Manager), and then run Setup again. If the error is not resolved by these steps, contact your technical support team or network administrator.

Setup could not stop the service service name Error=error number.

[Server Setup]

Another Internet service is active and could not be stopped by Microsoft Proxy Server Setup.

You can attempt to stop the service manually by using the Internet Service Manager, and then run Setup again. If the error is not resolved by these steps, contact your technical support team or network administrator.

Setup failed creating the temporary file.

[Client Setup]

Setup was unable to create a file needed temporarily for installation, possibly because of temporary files left from a previous installation attempt.

To delete temporary files, you may run Setup again or, if this fails, delete all files starting with and underscore (_) in your Windows and System directories and run Setup again.

Setup failed to create a process Error=error number.

[Client Setup]

Setup failed to create a process and may require system program files that are not present on this computer.

For Windows NT clients, make sure that the following files are present in the System directory: Router.exe, Lodctr.exe, and Unlodctr.exe. These are system files that Setup uses.

Setup failed to set Internet Explorer 1.x Proxy Settings. You may need to do this manually.

[Client Setup]

Your browser was not updated properly and must be manually configured for access to the server.

Setup has identified a newer version of the Microsoft Proxy Server (version number) installed on this computer in sharename. To install an older version you must first run version number’s Setup program and choose Remove All.

[Server Setup]

You are attempting to install an earlier version of Microsoft Proxy Server than the currently installed version.

You need to run Setup from the server’s local share path and select Remove All to remove all components from the current version of Microsoft Proxy Server before you can install an earlier version.

This software can only be installed on a computer with an Internet Information Server installation that includes the WWW service.

[Server Setup]

Microsoft Proxy Server requires that the WWW service be installed for Internet Information Server (IIS) 2.0 first.

You can install the WWW Service by running Internet Information Server Setup and selecting Add/Remove to install this service before running Microsoft Proxy Server Setup again.

For further information on installing Internet Information Server 2.0, consult your Microsoft product documentation for that product.

This software can only be installed on Windows NT Server version 4.00 build build number or later.

[Server Setup]

You have attempted to install Microsoft Proxy Server onto a preliminary release of Windows NT Server 4.0 that is not supported for the this release of Microsoft Proxy Server.

Upgrade Windows NT Server 4.0 to the current release before running Microsft Proxy Server Setup.

This software can only be installed on a computer running Windows NT Server version 4.00 or later.

You have attempted to install Microsoft Proxy Server onto an earlier version of Windows NT Server that is not supported for Microsoft Proxy Server.

Indicates an error occurred in TCP/IP services initialization.

Review your TCP/IP configuration settings to make sure they are valid.

You must reboot to complete previous installation before running Setup again.

[Client Setup]

A reboot of the computer is required to complete the installation.

Reboot the computer to complete the previous client Setup. You may also need to run Setup again to resolve errors or complete updating of system configuration settings.

Your system may be in an inconsistent state. Please run Setup again.

[Client Setup]
