Building Cross-Application Solutions

It is likely that at some point in the development of custom solutions, you will want to use data stored in a Microsoft® Access database in other Microsoft Office applications, namely Microsoft Word word processor and Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Microsoft Access provides two very powerful ways to communicate with other applications: OLE, Microsoft's strategic object technology, and dynamic data exchange (DDE).

The goal of this session is to introduce the variety of ways that the Microsoft Access database management system can communicate with other applications. After completing this session, you should:

Understand what services comprise OLE and their use within Microsoft Access 2.0.

Know how to implement OLE (and DDE where appropriate) in your Microsoft Access applications.

Understand the differences between OLE and DDE and know when to use each.
