Before Installing RAS

Before installing RAS, you need to perform the following tasks in order for the computer to become an Internet gateway.

To prepare a computer to become an Internet gateway

  1. Select an Internet service provider.

For a complete list of Internet service providers, refer to Estrada, Susan Connecting to the Internet, O'Reilly and Associates.

  1. Assign a dedicated pool of IP addresses for remote clients.

If you prefer to use a DHCP server, install a DHCP server on your network. For details, see Chapter 13, "Installing and Configuring DHCP Servers."

  1. Configure a Domain Name System (DNS) system either locally on your LAN or contact the Internet service provider for the IP address of their DNS computer.
  2. Install optional communication hardware in the Internet server.

Your server can be configured with Serial, ISDN, and X.25 adapters.

  1. Install Windows NT Server 3.5 on your computer.
