Windows NT as an Internet Gateway Server

Before final release of Windows NT 3.5, Microsoft conducted a limited pilot test of Windows NT 3.5 as an Internet gateway server. For security reasons, the Internet gateway server was installed on an isolated network, which was in turn connected to the Internet via Cisco routers. The RAS server and the Cisco routers were not connected to the corporate network.

The Internet gateway server for the pilot test had the following configuration:

• MIPS R4000, a RISC-based microprocessor
• 32 MB of RAM
• Digi International PC/2e serial adapter
• Digi International PCIMAC4 ISDN adapter
• One 16550 internal serial port
• Two Hayes Accura 14400 modems
• One Microcom Deskporte fast modem
• Four ISDN lines from GTE
• Three analog lines
