ACC: Paradox Password Protection Bypassed by Multiple Users

Last reviewed: May 14, 1997
Article ID: Q117609
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Access versions 2.0, 7.0, 97

SYMPTOMS

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

When you link (attach) a password-protected Paradox table nonexclusively to a Microsoft Access database, the table behaves normally, enabling you to view the table's contents after you supply the correct password. However, once the password has been supplied by a user, any other user can then open the linked table and view its contents without supplying a password.

CAUSE

The entire file is decrypted when a user opens it with the correct password.

RESOLUTION

Open the linked Paradox table exclusively, so that other users cannot open it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access 2.0, 7.0 and 97. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
