SYMPTOMS

Windows NT Backup may stop responding (hang) when you restore a backup set on a Compaq five gigabyte tape drive. This problem occurs when compression was used to backup.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem in the compression chip on some Compaq five gigabyte tape drives manufactured between January 1994 and April 8, 1994. If the problem is caused by the compression chip, Windows NT Backup hangs at the same point every time you attempt to restore the backup set.

MORE INFORMATION

To determine if your Compaq drive has a faulty compression chip:

  1. Determine if you have a suspect chip through visual inspection.

Look at the underside of the tape drive; the compression chip is located on the underside of the printed circuit board. Any compression chip with the following marking has the problem:

            | XXXXXXXX |-
             \_____________________________________________|
               | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |

XXXXXXXX is the lot number. Chips without the lot number do not have
       the problem.

NOTE: YYWWD is the date code. The country/region of origin could be
       Japan, Singapore, Korea, or Taiwan.

  2. If your tape drive has a lot number, obtain and use SRAM Tape Test Kit.

Compaq created an SRAM Tape Test Kit to allow you to determine if your specific chip is faulty. The kit contains one DAT test tape with usage instructions. If you have any questions or need to obtain the SRAM test kit, contact Compaq Support at (800)345-1518.
