Excel: Can See Background Images in "Transparent" Formula Bar

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel version 4.0, the formula bar may be transparent and display odd images or pieces of text. This is usually due to a syntax error in the Font= line of the EXCEL4.INI file. If this error is present in the EXCEL4.INI file, the application that is behind Microsoft Excel may show through in the formula bar. For example, if Program Manager is the background image behind Microsoft Excel, then portions of the icons or text from Program Manager may show through in the formula bar.

In Microsoft Excel version 3.0, the syntax error may cause the behavior described above or you may receive the following error message: 

   Not Enough Memory to Run Microsoft Excel

The Font= line is located under the [Microsoft Excel] section of the EXCEL4.INI file. This line should be in the following format: 

   FONT=Arial,10
   (FONT=FONT,SIZE)
This problem occurs when the comma is missing after the font name and no space is present to separate the font name from the point size. For example, the following syntax may cause display problems with the formula bar in Microsoft Excel: 

   Font=Arial10
With the incorrect syntax above, point size of the Normal style font is incorrectly set to 1.
