Q+E Makes Microsoft Excel File Read-Only

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:

- Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a

SUMMARY

If you access an open Microsoft Excel file in Q+E and return to Microsoft Excel to save the file, Microsoft Excel loses Read/Write privileges to the file and the Save As Dialog Box appears. If you try to save the file with the original name, the "Cannot Access Filename" error message appears, and you need to save the file with a new name.

Expected Behavior

Because Microsoft Excel opened the file first, it should retain Read/Write privileges to the file. When you choose the Save command from the File menu, the file should be saved without displaying the Save As dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION

Q+E exhibits the same behavior with a Microsoft Word text file: it overrides Word's rights to the file even thought it was opened in Word first.
