The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, when you open an unprotected file, the name of the file appears along with the progress indicators. However, if you open a file that requires you to enter a password, the status bar at the bottom of the Microsoft Excel workspace will show the normal progress indicators, but it will not show the name of the file.

You will still be able to open the protected file when you supply the correct password.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel version 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
