The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0,5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you create an embedded chart, the built-in default chart format may be applied, even when you set a custom chart format as the default.

CAUSE

When you create a chart in Microsoft Excel, your custom chart format that you have set as the default chart type may not be used if:

  • You are creating an Embedded chart.

    -and-

  • In ChartWizard - Step 1 of 5 you click Next and not Finish.

WORKAROUND

If you experience the above described behavior, manually apply the custom default chart format to your embedded chart. To do this, use the AutoFormat feature as follows:

  1. Double-click the embedded chart to activate it.

  2. From the Format menu, choose AutoFormat.

  3. Under Formats Used, select the User-Defined option.

  4. From the Formats list, select the name of the custom format you want to apply and choose OK.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel, you can set the Default Chart Format on the Chart tab by choosing Options from the Tools menu. From the Default Chart Format list, you can select the built-in format or a custom chart format you have created. You can also choose the Use The Current Chart button to create a custom chart format that contains the formatting applied to the current chart.

The chart format that is selected in the Default Chart Format list is applied to every new chart you create, except when you create an embedded chart. In this case, the built-in chart format is sometimes used.
