The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you select the Manual calculation option, and you manually recalculate a worksheet that contains an external reference, the following symptoms occur:

  • In Microsoft Excel 5.0, the external reference value is not updated the second time you use the Calc Sheet button on the Calculation tab of the Options dialog box.

    -or-

  • In a bound worksheet in Microsoft Excel 4.x, the external reference value is not updated the second time you use the Calc Document button on the Calculation tab in the Options dialog box.

    -or-

  • In an unbound worksheet in Microsoft Excel 4.x, the external reference value is not updated when you use the Calc Document button in the Calculation Options dialog box. (Note that this behavior occurs the first time you update the worksheet.)

NOTE: In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, this behavior only occurs if the sheet that contains the external reference is not the first sheet in the workbook.

WORKAROUNDS

To work around this problem, following the appropriate procedure below.

Microsoft Excel version 5.0

  • Recalculate the entire workbook by using the Calc Now button on the Calculations tab of the Options dialog box.

    -or-

  • Move the sheet that contains the external reference so that it is the first sheet in the workbook.

    -or-

  • Select the Automatic calculation option on the Calculation tab of the Options dialog box.

Microsoft Excel version 4.x

  • Select the cell that contains the external reference, place the cursor in the formula bar, and press ENTER to enter the formula again.

    -or-

  • If the reference is contained on an unbound worksheet, you can recalculate the sheet by pressing the F9 key, or by using the Calc Now button in the Calculation Options dialog box.

    -or-

  • Select the Automatic calculation option in the Calculation Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0c.
