XL5: DDE Poke Command Fails When Mouse Cursor Over Toolbar

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q118798
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you send dynamic data exchange (DDE) messages to Microsoft Excel from a client application, and you use the DDE POKE command, you do not receive an acknowledgment from Microsoft Excel if the mouse cursor is positioned over the toolbar in Microsoft Excel.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because when the mouse is positioned over the toolbar in Microsoft Excel, the ToolTips are displayed, and screen is no longer updated. This prevents Microsoft Excel from returning a DDE acknowledgment message to a client application that is poking information into Microsoft Excel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0c.
