XL5: Function Wizard Displays Argument Text Without Name

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Function Wizard to edit a formula that contains a function, and the function has multiple argument lists, the Editing Function dialog box displays the argument description without the argument names if you Cancel the dialog box that displays the multiple argument lists.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs only when you edit a function that has multiple argument lists, such as INDEX(), and you cancel the Function Wizard- Step 1 of 2 dialog box (the dialog box that contains the argument lists). For example, the INDEX() function has two different argument lists:

  • array, row_num, column_num

    -and-

  • array, row_num, column_num, area_num

When you choose Cancel in the dialog box that displays the argument lists, the argument names for the function do not appear in the Editing Function dialog box. This behavior is by design, because the argument names depend on the selection you make from the Arguments list. However, the description for each argument still appears in the Editing Function dialog box, even though you did not select an argument list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Excel.

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0c, when you edit a function that has multiple argument lists, neither the argument names, nor the argument descriptions appear in the Editing Function dialog box.
