Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q119484
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you use the Change Links dialog box to change the source of a link on a worksheet, you receive the following error message:

   Name is not defined

CAUSE

The Change Links dialog box appears when you choose the Change Source button in the Links dialog box for an OLE link. This error message appears when you use this dialog box to change the source of an OLE link to a document in another application, or an OLE link to a worksheet object created in another instance of Microsoft Excel.

WORKAROUND

To avoid this error message when you change the source of a link, use the formula bar to change the link, instead of using the Change Source button in the Links dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.
