XL5: GP Fault Formatting Chart Series Data Label Text

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you format data labels for a chart series, you receive a general protection (GP) fault if the chart type of another series in the chart is either pie or doughnut.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the chart contains multiple chart types, where one of the chart types is pie or doughnut, and you change the formatting of the data label for a series with a chart type other than pie or doughnut. Additionally, the GP fault only occurs when you format the data labels for a series immediately preceding or following the series that is of pie or doughnut type.

The problem does not occur when you format an individual data label; only when you select all of the data labels for a series and apply formatting. The formatting changes that cause this problem include font and number, such as changing the font to Times New Roman, or applying Bold formatting. Changing the alignment or pattern formatting for selected data labels does not cause the GP fault.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving a GP fault when you format the text in a data label on a chart under the conditions described above, do either of the following:

  • Format data labels before you change the chart type for a particular series to pie or doughnut.

    -or-

  • Format the chart data labels individually for the series that is not of pie or doughnut chart type.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Excel.
