MXL5: MS Excel Starts and Then Quits Without Error Message

Last reviewed: March 13, 1998
Article ID: Q121325
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Power Macintosh, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Excel version 5.0 on an Apple Power Macintosh, you may see the zoom rectangle zoom out (to indicate that the program is starting) and then zoom back in (indicating that the program quit), but you do not receive an error message indicating why the program is not started.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the PowerPC Finder Update system extension is not located in the Extensions folder of the System Folder.

This extension allows the operating system in general, and the Finder in particular, to display error messages when an application quits unexpectedly.
