Article ID: Q123190
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Query for Windows, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Query for Windows 95, version 2.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you refresh or edit the query that you retrieved for external data using the Microsoft Access 2.0 ODBC driver (version 1.00.1521), you may receive the error message:

   Opening Query Failed

CAUSE

You receive this error message if a field name of the retrieved data contains the word "from" or if a table from which the data was retrieved contains the word "from".

This problem has been confirmed to occur if you are using the following drivers:

Driver Version Driver Source Microsoft Excel Version

Odbcjt16.dll 2.00.2317 2.0 Driver Pack 5.0c
Odbcjt32.dll 3.40.2505 Office 7.0b 7.0a
Sqlsrv32.dll 2.65.0201 Driver AppNote 3.0 7.0a
Sqlsrv32.dll 2.65.0213 Office 97 7.0a

NOTE: This problem does not occur using the Microsoft Access version 1.0 ODBC driver.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message, and to either refresh the data or edit the query, use Microsoft Query, or Microsoft Access to change the name of the field or table that contains the word "from".

STATUS

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows.
