Last reviewed: February 2, 1998
Article ID: Q123193
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

If you rename the System folder after you install Microsoft Excel 5.0, you receive the following error message when you insert a module sheet in a workbook

   File not found

and the module sheet is not inserted.

If you record a macro using the Visual Basic language option, you receive the error message above, followed by:

   Unable to record

You may also receive this error message when you start Microsoft Excel.

CAUSE

This error message appears because Microsoft Excel 5.0 uses the path information to locate certain files that are installed to your System folder. This information is registered when you install Microsoft Excel 5.0. If you change the name of your System folder after you install Microsoft Excel 5.0, you encounter the problems described above.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message when you start Microsoft Excel or insert a module sheet, rename your System folder back to the name that it had when you installed Microsoft Excel.

Note that you can rename the System folder without closing Microsoft Excel.

STATUS

This is a known problem in Microsoft Excel 5.0. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
