Query: Error Adding Criteria to Float--Required Field

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Query version 1.0, when you add criteria to a field in an SQL Server table, you may receive the following error message 

   Column <field name> can't be used with the operator <operator>
where <field name> is the field the criteria that is added to and <operator> (for example IS GREATER THAN) is the operator you are using.

CAUSE

The above error message will appear if the following conditions are true:

  • The data type is float

    -and-

  • The Required option is active

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, disable the Required option for the specified field. When you disable this option, the field can contain a null value.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in version of Microsoft Query that ships with Microsoft Excel version 5.0c for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

The Required option requires that data be entered in the field. If Required is not selected, the field can contain a null value (that is, the field can be left blank).
