XL5: "The Selection is Invalid" When You Double-Click Chart

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996
Article ID: Q125402
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Query for Windows, version 1.0
  • Microsoft Office, versions 4.2, 4.3

SYMPTOMS

If you use MS Query to get external data, and you then plot that data in a Microsoft chart, if you double-click on the chart, you may receive the following error message:

   The Selection is Invalid

This problem occurs both with embedded charts and chart sheets, and it can occur with any type of chart. Note that this problem may occur only after you close and reopen the workbook.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you are using the version of the XLQUERY.XLA add-in that shipped with Microsoft Excel version 5.0.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, upgrade your version of Microsoft Excel to version 5.0c. If you continue to receive this problem after you install Microsoft Excel 5.0c, run the Setup program in maintenance mode and remove and then reinstall Microsoft Query.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.

MORE INFORMATION

If the problem persists even after you install Microsoft Excel 5.0c, check the "XLQUERYx=" lines in the [Init Commands] section of your EXCEL5.INI (located in your Windows directory) to make sure that they point to the appropriate XLQUERY.XLA file. You should be using the version of XLQUERY.XLA that shipped with Microsoft Excel 5.0c.

For this version of XLQUERY.XLA Should be
   Microsoft Excel approx. this size
   ----------------------------------------------

   5.0c 204,288K
   5.0 195,584K

If your XLQUERY.XLA does not have one of the file sizes listed in the above table, make sure that it came from Microsoft Excel 5.0c or later. Note that the file date is not a reliable troubleshooting characteristic, because the file date may change when you use Microsoft Query.
