XL5: GP Fault Using Go To While Function Wizard Dialog Open

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, if you display the Go To dialog box while the insertion point is in the Function Wizard dialog box, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Function Wizard dialog box is open, and you activate a different workbook, and then display the Go To dialog box by pressing F5 or by choosing Go To from the Edit menu.

For example, if you insert a function on a worksheet in BOOK1.XLS using the Function Wizard, you can select BOOK2.XLS from the Window menu while the insertion point is in a function argument box in the Function Wizard dialog box to reference a named range in BOOK2.XLS. However, if you then press F5, or choose Go To from the Edit menu, you receive a GP fault in Microsoft Excel.

Note that this problem only occurs when the workbook in which you are inserting the function does NOT contain a named range, and the workbook that you are referencing DOES contain a named range.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving a GP fault when you use the Function Wizard dialog box to insert a function in a workbook and you reference a range of cells in another workbook for one of the arguments, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Enter the reference by typing the named range in the argument box

in the Function Wizard dialog box as in the following example

             BOOK2.XLS!test

where BOOK2.XLS is the name of the workbook that contains the
          named range.

Method 2: Use cell references instead of the range name by doing the
          following:

          a. With the insertion point in the argument box in the Function
Wizard dialog box, select the workbook that contains the cell
range that you want to reference.

          b. On the worksheet that contains the cell range that you want to
             reference, select the desired range.

          c. In the Function Wizard dialog box, continue entering the
desired values in the remaining argument boxes, and choose
             Finish.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel version 5.0c.
