XL: VLOOKUP() Returns Incorrect Result

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, the VLOOKUP() worksheet function may return an incorrect result when the following conditions are true:

  • The lookup table and the VLOOKUP() function are on different worksheets.

    -and-

  • The Transition Formula Evaluation option is enabled on the worksheet that contains the lookup table.

When the above conditions are true, VLOOKUP() may incorrectly return the value of 0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, do the following to disable Transition Formula Evaluation option:

  1. Activate the worksheet that contains the lookup table.

  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  3. Click the Transition tab.

  4. Clear the Transition Formula Evaluation check box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
