XL: Excel Hangs When Entering Text In a Cell

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you enter text in a cell, if the default currency symbol under the International Settings in the Control Panel is set to a space character, Microsoft Excel may stop responding (hang).

If you enter numbers into cells when the default currency symbol is set to a space character, you will not experience this problem in Microsoft Excel.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, change the Currency Symbol setting in the Control Panel to a character other than a space character.

Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.x

or Microsoft Excel for Windows NT, version 5.0

To change the currency symbol, do the following:

  1. Start the Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the International icon.

  3. Click the Change button for the Currency Format.

  4. In the Symbol edit box, type a single character (not a space character) for the currency symbol, and click OK.

  5. Click OK again.

Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, versions 7.0

To change the currency symbol:

  1. Start the Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Regional Settings icon.

  3. Click the Currency tab.

  4. In the Currency Symbol box, type a single character (not a space character) for the currency symbol, and click OK.

Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.x

To change the currency symbol:

  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and then click Numbers.

  2. Type a a single character (not a space character) for the Currency Symbol, and close the dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
